Novi Sad

Novi Sad travel guide, visit Novi Sad and Exit

Visit Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia
and the jewel of the Vojvodina flatlands.
This beautiful town of some three hundred
thousand inhabitants is situated on the very
bank of the Danube. Take a stroll down the
central streets and experience the archaic
atmosphere of past times. This bohemian town
is full of old taverns and inns trough which
generations of bohemians used to visit and still
do. Many beginnings and highlights of Serbian
culture and history are directly connected to
Novi Sad. It will definitely win your affections
with its neo-baroque architecture.

Take a 15-minutes walk to the old Petrovaradin
fortress, one of the largest of fortresses in
Europe and see why it is called the Gibraltar
of the Danube.

The fortress town inside Petrovaradin
walls still hides old charming artisan
shops of the past centuries.
Discover the mysteries of 16 km of underground
facilities and passages below the fortress,
out of which not more than 8 km have been
fully excavated. Once a year, in July, this
fortress becomes a separate state – the STATE
OF EXIT festival. It is becoming increasingly
popular and is now one of the most visited
music festivals in Europe.

The city of Novi Sad lies on the slopes of
Fruska Gora Mountain, the largest natural linden
tree habitat in Europe and one of seven of
Serbia’s national parks. This “Holy Mountain”
of Serbia harbours 16? Serbian monasteries,
the oldest among them dating from
medieval times.
